    Hi ,

I have had multiple Logitech devices. Among them Harmony 880,890, 1000. Both 800s work like a charm. However the 1000 has many issues. First of all is not a reliable remote. The buttons will fail ( I am in my second set of 1000 under warranty). Also , although initially synch easy with the software, eventually became erratic, requiring to reboot on safe mode. Again the remote looks great and will work for a while , however save yourself a few hundreds and the hassle and get the 890.

You must face the remote at whatever piece of equipment you wish to turn on & off. BIG difference from the Bose system remote, which works through walls. And sometimes you have to touch the screen several times before it performs the function you wish. If it didn’t take the place of 6 remote controls in my living room, I would definitely reconsider.

I ACTUALLY PURCHASED THIS FOR MY HUSBAND FOR HIS BIRTHDAY, OTHER THAN A MIX UP ON THE NEXT DAY SHIPPING WE LOVE THE REMOTE. MY HUSBAND DID THE PROGRAMMING SO I’M NOT SURE HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS, GAVE HIM A NEW TOY TO PLAY WITH. REALLY NICE TO FINALLY HAVE ONE REMOTE!

This is the remote you want if you really don’t want to do anything. I own the Harmony 890, my wife thought for Christmas what a wonderful gift it would be to buy me the 1100 so that I would be able to control all my theater devices AND dim the lights. Here is the problem….it can’t control a z-wave light dimmer. The remote of the future was stumped by a $40 light dimmer. Nowhere in the literature did it say that it couldn’t. Even the Amazon description states:

“RF wireless capability. Support for 5,000+ brands and 225,000+ devices”

What does “RF wireless capability” mean? Well, according to the wonderful (sarcastic giggle) customer service rep that I spoke to in Mumbai, it means that the remote sends out an RF signal to the RF extender (sold separately of course) which sends out an IR signal so that you can control a device that is hidden in a cabinet. By the way, it took about 15 calls from me to the 24/7 customer friendly (sarcastic giggle again) rep before anyone called me back…about 45 days before my 90 day free customer service contract expired. I was given poor excuses why the flagship Harmoney remote was the equivalent of a Mercedes-Benz without a radio. The first rep (tier 1) that I spoke to back in November 2009 ran me through 50 minutes of running up and down stairs programing, reprogramming and testing the 1100 and RF extender before he gave up (much like my heart almost did) and told me that a tier 2 person would call me within 48hrs…..15 days later I called again and was told the same thing, when I questioned what the tier 2 people were going to do that the tier 1 people couldn’t I was told that they were the programmers, and that the reason that I was having a problem was because I was the “first person” in the world that was trying to control a GE light switch with a Harmony 1100. Ok, I said….I will wait. They were going to call me within 48hrs and “push” the new programing that would allow me to control the switch, after all it DOES send out an RF signal for the extender. When they finally called me….7 days later, I was told that the previous reps had been basically lying to get me off the phone, that I had two choices…(1) return the flagship 1100 for a Harmony remote costing $200 less that DID control z-wave, or (2) buy a $140 IR dimmer switch. After telling the rep what he could do with the remote I gave him option 3….run me through the programming of my old 890 for a z-wave device. After he explained that he was doing me a favor because the “normal” cost of a service call is $29.95, I gave him another lesson in english vulgarities.

Lesson learned: The BEST Harmony remote can not control the most basic of light switches, Logitech gives their remotes way too much credit, and finally the customer service reps at Logitech are about as useful as the 4 year old that you need to call to program your VCRs clock.

A nice gift, a horrible experience.
